The University of Cincinnati men’s basketball team defeated Valparaiso University, 81-77, in overtime in the third-place game of the Paradise Jam Tournament Monday evening.
Senior guard Jarron Cumberland did not play due to injury. Senior forward Trevon Scott and junior center Chris Vogt stepped up on offense.
Vogt finished with a season-high 21 points and seven rebounds, while Scott added 12 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
UC held a 60-49 lead with six minutes remaining, but Valparaiso used a 13-1 run to come back and force overtime.
The Bearcats managed to hold on despite committing 22 turnovers. Junior guard Keith Williams added 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting and seven rebounds.
The Crusaders were led by Javon Freeman-Liberty with 32 points, nine rebounds, four assists, four steals and a block.
UC (4-1) ends the tournament with a 2-1 record.
The Bearcats return to Fifth Third Arena Saturday for a matchup against the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
