In basketball, one minute you're in. The next, you're out. Cronin is...

Is everyone ready for at least three more years of UC basketball mediocrity?

While the University of Cincinnati men’s basketball team is clinging (understatement) to its NCAA tournament hopes, Bob Huggins is preparing his eighth-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers for a possible No. 2 seed in the big dance.

But I don’t want to make this about the past.

At this point, blame has to be placed on Cronin and a coaching change needs to be made.

The UC basketball team is nothing short of an embarrassment. Not because of their record, I can deal with that, but because of a lack of consistency and motivation.

They have the talent to win games, but laziness, mental errors, turnovers out of timeouts and a lack of consistency is inexcusable. To go into South Florida Tuesday night and be down 18 points late in the second half is pathetic.

Isn’t this team fighting for a spot in the Big Dance?

It’s like the team doesn’t care. Do you ever see them play with the fire former teams had?

Or play with a chip on their shoulder like they’re out to prove something?

Jason Maxiell and Eric Hicks wouldn’t put up with half the crap this team goes through.

Those guys would fight anyone at anytime to defend their teammates. Cronin’s players this year would fight anyone at anytime to defend only themselves.

I’ve heard he should have one more year, and I have to ask why?

One more mediocre year where UC doesn’t make the tournament isn’t a step in the right direction. Might as well find someone now and start the rebuilding process again.

Not once have I ever heard Cronin say it was his fault or he has to do a better job — enough with the excuses.

I’ll give a prime example. My job forces me to listen to the “Chris Mack Show” on the radio every week.

Chris Mack is the coach of Xavier University and week after week I hear him say he has to do a better job at coaching particular players or he needs to do better getting certain players involved in the offense.

Mack doesn’t have the most talented players in the world, but he gets the most out of them every night.

And I know Cronin would counter by saying Xavier isn’t in the Big East. Well, no, they’re not. But it doesn’t mean his players don’t play hard every minute of every game.

It honestly sickens me to watch the Cats this year. I long for the days when UC players were swatting shots across the court or dunking over players, putting them on a poster.

UC used to be the team embarrassing whoever stepped on the court with them. Now they’re embarrassing themselves by stepping on the court.

I don’t know why I’m surprised this season turned out the way it did. Every year, Cronin-coached teams have underachieved, but he was given a pass because they were young, inexperienced and rebuilding.

That might be true, but a consistent lack of effort has been a constant every year since Cronin’s arrival.

Ultimately, Cronin has to be responsible for it. If he knew when he recruited his players they didn’t play with any sort of passion, then why recruit them? If he didn’t know they lacked effort, it’s his job to pull the effort out of them.

Four years is plenty of time.

UC managed to let go of former women’s coach J. Kelly Hall after two seasons and a
14-17 record in his final season. If two years is enough for Hall, how much time does the men’s coach deserve?

Huggins had the ability to make the most of his players’ abilities. Cronin simply doesn’t.

It’s never easy for someone to lose a job, and it’s not something to take lightly, but it’s time to cut ties with Cronin.

He’s had plenty of time to put a competitive team on the court and it hasn’t happened.

Steps in the right direction aren’t coming quickly enough — if they’re coming at all.

It’s time to circle the wagons and rebuild the program with a coach ready to bring in some fresh faces. A coach who can pump life into his players and maybe into Fifth Third Arena.

All I heard last year was that this was going to be our year. Most teams will be losing a lot so UC would be in a great position. At that time, we didn't even have Stephenson. Apparently, with Stephenson and Wright, and everyone back-we are worse. So the conference is a little worse than last year, the team is more talented. The only common denominator is Mick. I remember after the preseason tourney, Mick said "we knew what we inherited and we knew it would take time but now we're here." When put on Big Monday a few times Mick said "I think they realize we're a pretty good team." Then after losses-ALL THE EXCUSES. I want us to win but for Mick to get fired-problem is can't have both.

Mr Sabel, I appreciate your passion for this team and the program. However, I think some of your arguments are a bit misplaced. While I am not a Mick supporter, neither do I believe he should be fired this year. You say we lack consistency, have too many mental errors, and don't play with fire. All of which I agree with, but you go on to say it sickens you that we are not dunking on people or swatting shots. Well those things usually happen because you are physically better than your opponent, thus asserting your will, not when you try harder, or have a stronger mental prowess.

The main reason Cronin should be given one more year is to, hopefully, retain the services of Stephenson and Gates for another season. If we start over now it'll be without both. Next year would be Wright, Thomas, Bishop, Dixon, and McClain if that were the case. Studies show that success in the Big East comes with a little more patience. Most coaches are given 5 years before getting canned. Mick came in a year behind, so this is really year 3. I truly think this team could compete for a C-USA title, but teams are always a week away from a 3 game losing streak in the Big East.

One more year and we will see if it's indeed time to start anew. It's not to benefit Cronin, but the program itself.

I'm tired of Mick's excuses. X game bigger for X. For God's sake, you and Huggins for that matter have a losing record against them. The only game we have sold it in 3 years is against X. SFU had to win with backs against the wall, Beating UConn was because players saw them win in the past-are you kidding? Louisville had no quality wins. Cmon Mick, take responsibility., Maybe you should instill how important these games are. UConn isnt Rip Hamilton's UConn. St. Johns isn't Chris Mullen's St. Johns. You have one of the best newcomers. All I heard is how much better we would have ben last year with Cashmere. Gates is better, Stephenson is here, and Wright is here. What is your excuse now coach? I don't care if X is in the A-10. That league has a winning record vs Big East including losses by us, Villanova to Temple, and St. Johns to Richmond. In the last 6 years, X has 2 Elite 8, 3 Sweet 16s, and a secound round loss. We have none. Huggins never let this happen. Mick, you need to show your love for the university and leave. Go be an assistant at X to see how things are supposed to be run.

Free throw shooting is the least of our problems. There have been many teams that have had awful free throw percentages, but have done very well in "The Dance". Here's our problem "...laziness, mental errors, turnover out of timeouts and a lack of consistency..".

Being that I am an active contributor to the Alumni Association (I am one of a very very few in my region who proudly displays UC license plates), I hope Mr. Thomas reads this article, and decides to make that change. I know i am not alone when I say that even us "die-hard" fans will stop giving at some point.

FIRE MICK CRONIN!!!

what i can't stomach is he free throw shooting. Cashmere Wright shot 80+% in high school and is right around 55% now. And this is indicative of the entire teams struggles at the line. I've neve seen something so simple look so hard.
