UC still has not acted to remove the asbestos and black mold in Morgens Hall.

The University of Cincinnati has yet to respond to reports of the presence of black mold and asbestos in Morgens Hall, and the health of previous residents may be at risk.

The university is legally mandated to respond to the situation by notifying all previous residents who could be affected by the toxic mold, Linda May, international health and safety consultant said. In that notification, all health risks must be listed and people are encouraged to be medically tested for illnesses caused by black mold and asbestos.

“There is a zero tolerance policy for this,” May said.

The mold can go undetected for years while growing within walls, in ceilings and underneath floors. Eventually, the mold may become potent enough to damage building materials and the occupants’ health.

“Unfortunately, no one from Housing and Food Services, or any other UC office, has contacted me about this,” said Peggy Shannon-Baker, a former resident of Morgens Hall.“To my knowledge, past residents still have not been informed of this, nor have we even received a statement that actually confirms that mold is or was
in Morgens.”

Certain tests may be performed at low cost during a physical survey by using a thermal scanner to report temperatures and moisture levels behind walls. Other noninvasive options for mold detection include the analysis of basic air quality reports.

Some buildings have what is called Sick Building Syndrome, according to the World Health Organization. SBS occurs when occupants experience headaches, throat irritation, nausea, acute allergy symptoms and fatigue, but symptoms may occur even if there is no specific report of mold or asbestos. Small changes may be made to the air quality and moisture levels to prevent mold growth and decrease the SBS symptoms.

The U.S. military reported on the dangers of black mold, which contains a chemical called trichothecene mycotoxin. Their report said trichothecene mycotoxin is very common in molds that are found in school buildings.

“This family of mycotoxins causes multiogran effects, including emesis and diarrhea, weight loss, nervous disorders [and] cardiovascular alterations, ” as stated in Chapter 34, sections one and two of the U.S. military report.

May said that individuals who lived in Morgens Hall should be tested immediately for mold poisoning and seek proper treatment, which does not include antibiotics or inhalers.

The month of May is, in some states, Toxic Injury Awareness and Education month. For information on mold exposure and poisoning, including a list of symptoms, visit epochtimes.com or the  U.S. Military’s Chapter 34 Trichothecene Mycotoxin report online.

The US Govt Published the GAO report on Black Mold and toxic effects along with the copies of the US regualtions in Sept 2008 I reccomend that anyone seeking inform On MOld and the toxic exposures not only seach the links given in the article but also downlaod and Read the US Govt Report. The Govt has regulations on this this issue and as I stated they have a zero tolerance for exposures I can also be contacted with any questions at LMay4111@aol.com or you can call me 24/7 at 217 390 4299 LMay4111@aol.com

I am a building consultant in northeast Florida. I can assure you that NO threshold has been established for mold "toxicity". Danger is limited to those possessing compromised immune systems and those allergic to mold - that is the deviant portion of the normal curve. - very very few people. Ask the consult to present proof of danger criteria, based on a nationally-adopted, peer-reviewed standard. There is none.
We have here the beginnings of a lawsuit which will waste enormous amounts of public treasure. The lawyer's new mantra rhymes: Mold is Gold, because Asbestos has Left-Us. But, here we have both.
Send me an email, and I will send great quantities of supportive information - gratis

I am a physician who has become an educator in the area of environmental illnesses and chemicla sensitivity which is often caused by exposure to mold and mycotoxins as well as other chemicals like pesticeds or even heavy metals. I find it fascinating to have discovered an entirely untapped field of Medicine - Environmental Medicine- and to try to explain it top the public. WHat really interests people is how this affects them. I explain that ther little intolerances that many people (largely women) experience as we age is an early sign of mild environemntal intolerance and illness. This means when you don't like perfume, air freshenrs, deisel exhaust and the clothing tags itch tour neck - that you may be on the way to developing memory loss, sensitivity to alcohol and foods and cognitive impairment or autoimmunity. Mold is one of the largest denied factors in causing human disease and we need to educate the puiblic and doctors as well as medical students in the methods of diagnosing and treating these people who could recover if given appropriate care. We must also tune out those who are closed minded , not out for the patient's interest, and have litigation fees in their wallet when they speak because they have such obvious ulterior motives that they cannot be taken sseriously. www.environmentalmedicineinfo.com and lisa@nagy1.com for questions, or my lecture at the Cleveland Clinic on this subject.

Phillip. Phillip...there may be no threshold established BECAUSE of the lawsuit activity you purport! Insurance lobbyists hate the truth about mold exposure! There are none so blind! Simple fact is, mycotoxin producing fungi are extremely toxic and not just to the immunocompromised. Many reports have documented that cumulative mold exposure over extended periods compromise the integrity of an individuals immune system. Mold may be gold, but ignorance is contributing to illness and death....

No threshold for toxic mold has been adopted in the USA (unlike all other developed nations) because of the fact that even low levels of chemical exposure are now accepted as causing harm. There are also a wide variety of reactions in previously healthy people, ranging from death to no apparent reaction. Toxic mold produces mycotoxins, bacteria in damp buildings produce endotoxins, and damp building materials produce toxic chemicals that offgas. All these can interact and combine to produce Sick Building Syndrome in damp buildings, according to experts. The "rant" that mold does not harm "healthy" people is old, inaccurate science that is heavily promoted by insurance and risk management "defense" interests. Visit The Center for School Mold Help at www.schoolmoldhelp.org for over 1750 articles on the topic, including how to recognize the symptoms and what to do about mold in school buildings. Bottom line is: these students should document the conditions thoroughly and get out ASAP.

@Philip:
What the hell is wrong with you? The toxicity of the mold is not the question here. The fact remains that there was mold found in these buildings and that UC has neither responded nor contacted any of the past residents yet, which is what it should have done weeks before.

If you really think there is nothing wrong with mold, I am curious to find out if you be will walk into these buildings with your kids and family without any protection (since graduate students and their families living there seem to have made no difference to your case).

And FYI, asbestos was also found in the buildings. If you still think UC is doing a great job with this issue, please go and have yourself examined.
