Figures printed on colorful flyers were taped onto seats in Nippert Stadium Wednesday, June 3 in an attempt to inform students of statewide unemployment statistics.
The display itself is actually an installation project completed by three University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Art, Architecture and Planning students.
The statistics printed are pulled from percentages of Ohio’s unemployment rate two years ago, but due to the onset of the recession, the figures may actually be worse, said Kelly Tobias, a sixth-year fine art student and one of the members who put up the flyers.
Although there were guarantees of finding employment after graduation, in the current economy, it is unfortunately not the case, Tobias said.
“We spend so much money on college,” Tobias said. “We expected to have a job to pay it back.”
In addition to hanging up the flyers, the students also constructed a viewfinder on the opposite end of the stadium. When looked into, the same statistics are written across a transparent pane.
The project, which was thought up by three DAAP students, was meant to be somewhat shocking, said Ruth Kennedy, a fifth-year fine art and arts education student.
“A lot of seniors have this problem,” Kennedy said.
The unavailability of jobs for graduating seniors is a problem that reaches across all areas of study, she added.
Over 31,000 people of the unemployed in Ohio possess a college degree, according to the flyer.
Kristen Hendrixson, the third member of the trio that put up the installation was not present at the time of the interview.
