Another University of Cincinnati college could be without a permanent dean.

Valerie Hardcastle, dean of McMicken College of Arts and Sciences, is a top-three candidate for the available provost and executive vice president position at Colorado State University.

“This letter expresses my enthusiastic interest in the position of provost/executive vice president at Colorado State University,” Hardcastle wrote in a letter to the position’s search committee, dated Oct. 12, 2009. “Colorado State University … presents an exciting and timely vision of excellence.”

Hardcastle was at CSU for a two-day visit and interview Thursday, Jan. 28.

Hardcastle's application to CSU

Last spring, Hardcastle interviewed for the executive dean position at The Ohio State University’s arts college. Although Hardcastle was among the final candidates, she withdrew her name from the pool.

“The University of Cincinnati, and McMicken College in particular, are very exciting places to be right now. I’m proud to be part of this momentum ... I do not believe the grass is greener anywhere else,” Hardcastle wrote in an e-mail to A&S faculty May 15, 2009, after withdrawing her name from the OSU dean search.

CSU’s search committee met Friday, Feb. 5, to discuss the candidates. There is no set date for appointment, said Kathy DuQuoin, executive assistant to the provost office.

Colorado’s provost/executive vice president position became vacant when Tony Frank, the last person in that position, was appointed president of the university in June 2009.

Rick Miranda, dean of the College of Natural Sciences at CSU, became the interim executive vice president and provost in December 2009. Miranda is also one of the top three candidates. He interviewed Monday, Feb. 1.

Robert Sternberg, the dean of Arts and Sciences at Tufts University, is the third candidate. He was the first to interview Thursday, Jan. 21.

Harcastle replaced Karen Gould, former A&S dean, in 2007 as college’s 20th dean. Gould left UC to become provost at California State University, Long Beach.

In 2008, Hardcastle earned $163,200. Figures for her latest salary were not available by press time.

In Fall 2009, Colorado State University’s enrollment was 25,413. The University of Cincinnati’s Fall 2009 enrollment was approximately 39,000.
