The News Record's worst films of 2011
In a better-than-average year for movies, there were still plenty of stinkers. Check them out, or don't.

Brad Pitt stars in the wildly ambitious, but ultimately fatally flawed, “The Tree of Life.”
The Bottom Five:
1. “THE TREE OF LIFE”
Why isn’t the new Twilight movie No. 1 on this dubious list? Well, there was the offensively bad “The Tree of Life.” Terrence Malick’s fifth stab at directing was nonsensical, confusing and annoying. Long stretches of time with no dialogue, an appearance by dinosaurs and an annoyingly subtle Brad Pitt made this movie unwatchable. As an added bonus, Sean Penn makes an absurdly brief appearance and completely sleepwalks through his role. I would absolutely never see this movie again, and I question the taste of anyone who believed this film was as great as Cannes said it was.
2. “THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN, PART 1”
“Breaking Dawn, Part 1” was many things: Inappropriate — even for its audience, plotless, pandering, disgusting, horribly acted, poorly directed, a waste of talent, a waste of money, a cash-grab and apparently the cause of many seizures across the country.
3. “GREEN LANTERN/THE CHANGE-UP”
This was supposed to be the summer of Ryan Reynolds; it decidedly was not. “Green Lantern” was an overly computer-generated mess, while “The Change-Up” was a filthy “Freaky Friday” knock-off with Reynolds and the usually hilarious Jason Bateman in horrible roles. Reynolds, who I still believe is talented, was not ready or fit for either role, and based on the box office failure of these two movies, people obviously agreed.
4. “HALL PASS”
Remember when the Farrelly Brothers were funny? “There’s Something About Mary” and “Shallow Hal” came out more than ten years ago and the pair has yet to make anything worthwhile since. However, they have yet to make anything as blatantly offensive as “Hall Pass.” A talented cast including Owen Wilson and Christina Applegate are wasted here with a terrible premise and even worse jokes.
5. “30 MINUTES OR LESS”
After turning in an Oscar-worthy performance in last year’s “The Social Network,” Jesse Eisenberg reteamed with “Zombieland” director Ruben Fleischer to make a humorless, strangely dark film about a pizza delivery boy (Eisenberg) who gets involved with a pair of would-be criminals (played by the overrated Danny McBride and the horribly unfunny Nick Swardson). Eisenberg and the normally comical Aziz Ansari seem embarrassed to be a part of this disturbingly dull action/comedy.
The Dishonorable Mentions:
1. “INSIDIOUS”
After hearing so much positive buzz about this low-budget horror flick, my expectations were sky high, which was probably a mistake. Convoluted and campy in all the wrong ways, “Insidious” lacks any real scares and takes the title of worst horror movie I saw this year (and I saw “Paranormal Activity 3”).
2. “A VERY HAROLD & KUMAR 3D CHRISTMAS”
The comedy duo best known for popularizing late-night trips to White Castle returned for a disappointing Christmas-themed adventure. Painfully unfunny, uncreative and lacking any of the heart that made the first film so refreshing, I can only hope this is the last time we see Harold and Kumar, at least for a while.
