University of Cincinnati quarterback Ben Mauk's appeal for a sixth year of eligibility has been denied by the NCAA Thursday, Feb 14, meaning the senior's college football career is over.

The NCAA denied Mauk's appeal on the basis of NCAA bylaw 30.6.1.2, which states a redshirt year, which Mauk received in 2003 at Wake Forest University, is in the control of the student-athlete and does not constitute a missed participation opportunity.

The shoulder injury Mauk sustained in 2006, which caused him to miss the entire season, was supported by medical documentation and was out of the athlete and the institution's control.

The NCAA allows student-athletes five years to complete four years of eligibility. Mauk's application did not meet the criteria for a waiver for an additional year.

"Situations like this are hard when I know how dedicated Ben's life has been to football," head coach Brian Kelly said in a press release on Feb. 14. "It's unfortunate, but all things considered, he will handle this and continue his career in football whether it be playing or coaching. He will always be a member of the Bearcats."

During the 2007 season, Mauk set UC records for touchdown passes (31) and helped guide the Bearcats to a 10-3 season and a No. 17 final ranking in the Associated Press poll, the highest in school history.

Mauk has earned a bachelor's degree in secondary education from Wake Forest University and continues to pursue a master's degree in criminal justice at UC, according to UC officials.
