Column: Is cheerleading a sport or not?

My Take

So, the UC Cheer and Dance teams fared well at the National Championships in Orlando, Florida this past weekend. Great. I hope they do even better next year, but instead of helping them feel even more spirited and cheery than they do, I have to open up a can of worms in the form of the question that haunts every cheerleader or dancer that believes what they do is actually a sport.

Well...is it or isn't it?

This question has sat in and burned a hole in the pocket of American society far too long. Time to address the problem.

This topic was discussed two weeks ago in a course I am taking. The one concept the class, which consists of women and men came to is, to be a sport, the "sport" at hand must be physical, competitive and organized. Sure some are thinking to themselves that cheerleading fits the bill...think again.

First and foremost we are talking about the cheer and dance teams main purpose for which they were constructed, and that is to cheer for another team like basketball or football.

Any team that is created to cheer for another team people actually pay to watch doesn't deserve to be called sport. These groups are at the games to merely rile up the crowd and help create a home court advantage for the real sports.

Second, if it is a sport, what exactly are the participants playing? Are they at the games to show the fans how special it must be to do a flip 15 feet in the air and land in three other cheerleaders' arms instead of on their heads? That's what it looks like to me.

I couldn't tell you the last time I saw Tony Bobbitt and Jason Maxiell interrupt Bob Huggins halftime speech, run onto the court and take their places Indian style on the baseline to cheer on the performance given by the Dance team. And I sure couldn't tell you the last time Robert Whaley or Kareem Johnson dunked one home, stopped under the basket, slapped their hands together and screamed "Lets go 'Cats."

There sure isn't a score at the end of the halftime show stating the cheerleaders in the black tops are beating the others in the red tops.

So again I ask, what do they play? They don't...period.

Sure they go to places like Orlando and compete with other cheerleaders once a year, but the main purpose is, well, to cheer on sports, try and be one with a once-a-year contest.

I'm not downing the teams at all. I think what they have worked for and accomplished as a unit is very productive and exciting for them and others who appreciate what they do.

I am actually one of those people that will praise them for the time and strength they put into their performances. I believe they all stay in incredible shape to be able to do what they do, but if we start accepting all the wannabe sports as sports, it will only defeat the purpose of having sport all in itself.

Before you know it video games, although fun, time-consuming and very competitive, will be a sport. Before you know it, we will call anything a sport if people feel strongly about it.

Same goes for fishing, billiards and putt-putt. These hobbies and games are also on the borderline as a sport to some, but to me they just fill up the empty space in the wee hours of the morning on ESPN or they are simply put on at the same time as a real sport to please promoters of the wannabes. This is a way to air the wannabe sports when no one else is watching.

Sport or not, the question posed will live forever. I just hope they don't forget to cheer at halftime shows, because overall it is fun to watch.

People have a lot of oppinions and cheerleading is a sport!!!! and exactly like the comment posted by Michelle your arguement is not very good. how can you compare cheerleading to fishing and video games?? there are high school cheerleading teams that ya. do not compare to private gym's but that do compete on the side to soport their school's teams and private gym's that are some of the best out of the best in cheerleading. and to jason i guess you havn't truly seen a true cheerleading competition because of you have private gym's would leave your mouth open.!!! and to taylor sweetie you may call your self a cheerleader but im sorry you're not!!!!! you can call your self a softball player or a baskerball player but not a cheerleader!!! a true cheerleader does Consider this a sport and will not compare it to anything else because to a true cheerleader, cheerleading is their life like it to me. a lot of people have lots of oppinions but only because they have no idea of what cheerleading truly is and dont know how to give it a chance. "A CHEERLEADER HAS TO BE AS POSED AS ANY DANCER, AS GREATER THAN ANY GYMNAST, anD AS STRONG AS ANY FOOTBALL PLAYER"

Billiards, putt-putt, fishing? This is by far the poorest arguement I have ever heard. Competitive cheerleading teams are strictly constructed to "compete". Granted there are High School teams who don't demonstrate the skill level that the higher teams do, you have a lot of nerve to put such an advanced physical sport in the same category as video games, that just makes you sound ignorant. You must not know all of the facts, do you consider wrestling a sport? gymnastics? swimming? You should really look into facts before you go off making arrogant statements, you're obviously viewing this with a very stereotypical mindset and your arguement holds no real ground.

i am a cheerleader, and i would just like to point out, that cheerleading is NOT a sport! we may compete every once in a while, but we do not have to risk contact injuries that people do in everyother sport! dont get me wrong i loveee to cheer, but i also play softball and basketball, so untill you go out to do those real sports you have no idea what it is.

1st of all cheerleading IS a sport...not some side line event!!!!!!!!!it freaking pisses me off when i hear people say that it is not. i cheer. we have to train for cheer: running, weightlifting, etc. i bet you cant tumble: (round-off-backhandspring-backhandspring-backtuck-layout-full????!!!!..you cant do that if your life depended on it) i bet you cant do stunts: (extention lib, scorpion, y scale, bow and arrow, halow, or airbest????!!...you couldnt do that if your life depended on it) we train and compete just like any other sport, on a daily bases...i mean come on...who cant make a basket, or throw a ball???

Yes, running and throwing with a ball is definitly a sport! because i am pretty sure that takes no skill AT ALL. Whoever you are buddy, I want to see you lift a girl in the air with one hand. I bet you can't and never will. Can you go a back flip with no hands? I know you can't. Also read this before you state your opinion:

According to the Women's Sports Foundation the following criteria has to be met to be considered a sport:
•A physical activity which involves propelling a mass through space or overcoming the resistance of a mass
•A contest or competition against or with an opponent
•Is governed by rules which explicitly define the time, space and purpose of the contest and the conditions under which a winner is declared
•The acknowledged primary purpose of the competition is a comparison of the relative skills of the participants

There you go, CHEERLEADING IS A SPORT and you need a lot more talent than running down a field or bouncing a ball!

Just because cheerleaders cheer for an other sport doesn't mean that its not a sport! Some cheer teams only cheer at games because they have to. All anyone every sees is the sideline part of cheerleading. Basketball and football games are practice for competitive cheerleaders. Times have change and so has cheerleading, so before you go and say that cheerleading isn't a sport look at what cheerleading is today.

You are a jackass who obviously doens't know much about cheerleading. "What do they play" is the best argument you can come up with...give me a break. What do ice skaters play? Not all sports involve some sort of a ball my misguided friend, some are about pure skill and control of the body, whether through dance, gymnastics, stunting, or in the case of cheer a combination of all three. Also, some cheer squads are created for the sole purpose of competition and never cheer for any team at any sporting event; they exist only to compete. As for your ludicrous slipery slope argument, no, video games will never be considered a sport because they are not physical and it is a stupid comaprison. Overall I found your article to be truly condesending, sexist, and without any really or vaild argument as to why cheer should not be considered a sport. Your sarcasm and ridicule did not convince me in the least and I found it all to be in very poor taste.
