Column: Does pubic hair serve a purpose?

Baring it All

A good guy friend of mine recently inherited a large box of high-class, vintage porn magazines dating back to 1983.

There were a good 50 issues of Penthouse, which I'd never personally encountered before.

My Saturday morning consisted of eating Cinnamon Toast Crunch at his house and critically examining close-up shots of the vulva and vaginal area.

My friend and I came to the conclusion that women must not have been big on shaving their pubic hair back then.

This spurred a lot of questions in my mind, having reached adolescence when shaving was the social norm.

When did women start shaving? Why? Was it at the suggestion of their lovers or was it an independent choice? Is it safe or healthy to shave it all off?

What the hell is the purpose of pubic hair, anyway? Do typical guys prefer that immaculate little strip of hair most porn stars have?

I took it upon myself to do some research about the purpose of pubic hair and polling style preferences amongst straight male friends.

It turns out that it's still unclear as to why we have pubic hair, but there are a few theories.

One of the possible answers is pheromones. You know, the odorless scent that your body produces to attract others?

You can purchase it in bottle form in an attempt to lure others, although it's possible that it's a hoax.

Anyhow, pheromones naturally get trapped in pubic hair when apocrine glands secrete around the genitals and under your arms and combine with natural bacteria. Yum.

So hypothetically it seems possible that when you shave off your pubic hair, you're unconsciously making yourself less sexually attractive to others by ridding yourself of pheromones.

Another theory is that women's pubic hair is like the tiny hairs you have in your nostrils, which protect from outside germs and dirt.

The flaw in this theory is that if this were the case, wouldn't men have hair on the head of their penis surrounding their urethras?

What about warmth? Perhaps. But don't we have our cute little panties from Victoria's Secret for that?

And if we needed it for warmth, wouldn't we still be hairy all over and ape-ish like in the caveman days?

I don't know about the rest of you, but I've never suffered from cold genitals before.

In any case, we have pubic hair. Maybe it's necessary and maybe it isn't. So, what to do with it? Go bald as a cue ball? Go au naturel?

It is of course your decision. But most of us girls would be lying if we claimed we didn't value the opinion of the ones who, er, come into contact with it the most.

After polling about 20 people, the results were surprising.

Considering most female porn stars are completely shaved or have those teensy-weensy little strips of fuzz, I was expecting most college-aged people to share that preference.

However, only three people claimed to prefer a completely bald vulva region.

None mentioned the fuzzy little strip so popular in the adult film genre. The remaining majority voted for the trimmed look.

One individual summed it up best, "Trimmed. While I don't mind anything per se, I like to know that I'm not having sex with a Barbie doll. That being said, no need for overgrown forests and all."

Eloquently put, and it appears we can stop with the Brazilian waxes now.

hey english guy, from the british food i've eaten, a hair would be welcome. but back to the main line, pubic hair does serve a purpose and unclean is unclean whether it is shaved or not. the main answer is that you have been programmed. for those of you who did not grow up watching the TV, you have different values and standards than those who did. shaving your pubes is on the same lines as shaving your legs and armpits. american men have been programmed to want their women pre-pubesient. the razor companies sell more razors, the shave cream companies sell more shave cream. and so on and so on

Pubic hair reduces skin to skin friction during sexual intercourse. Simple as that.

Most people have a general ignorance of the function of the body.
You have all heard that when persons are poisoned for example with arsenic or mercury...it shows up in the hair. The hair is the record of it.
Well if you understand the human body...the bodies function is to detox itself from poisons, protect itself and heal itself.
Has anyone considered that the purpose of hair is to make sure toxins are kept away from these regions of the body?
The follicle has drawn out the poison and placed it into the hair to take it away from the body.
Hair then must do this for all less toxic poisons in our body.
The hair perhaps protects the brain...the center of everything.
And perhaps pubic hair protects and the reproduction organs and testes to take out toxins.
And armpits may serve the same purpose.
Though we all don't want to look like animals because we find it ugly...
perhaps the purpose of hair is to keep us healthy and functioning as purely as possible.

I'm a mature adult male and I love for a woman to have pubic hair. It's presence does enhance the sexual experience tremendously, both from it being a harbor for her pheromones and from a tactile standpoint. If you've never run your fingers through a lady's gloriously thick bush you are missing out on one of life's greatest pleasures!

Now, that said I also have to say that my wonderful lady is an advocate of keeping her pubes shaved. She is 30+ years my junior so shaved is the "norm" for her generation and her personal preference. However her preference does not take away anything from her desireability or our sexual pleasures, and I certainly wouldn't try to force her into letting her bush grow just to appease me! I love her just as she is, and always will.

pubic hairs are curly. and if you rub your hand on them, they will make a strange-sexy sound. they also add the 'warmth' of the play..

Second only to the obeseity epidemic, pubic hair is growing at an alarming rate and something needs to be done! I started a foundation on facebook called " God gave you that garden ladies, PLEASE mow the lawn" strickly to educate and assist in habits associated with grooming!

Way to go Dr Susan! Pubic hair has a reason, and i personally think that it is not only stupid looking, but unclean, and less sexual by shave everything. I have been divorced for 11 years and i have been down on alot of women in that time. The women that were totally shaved just didn't have the smell that REALLY turned me on. I think that it is just that the young guys just haven't gone down on a REAL natural female so they don't know how much differant all the pheromones can make versus the little girl look.

I watched with horror as this fad became increasingly common during the 1990s. Believe it or not it was almost universal for women even young women to have full public hair until the early to mid-1990s. By the early 1990s a tiny minority started to shave it off, then throughout the 1990s it became more and more common to the state we see today where it seems to be almost universal among the young and very common among the middle aged as well. It is a matter of the decline of what was left of western civilization and that fact that we are a sick depraved society. Public hair is natural and its one more sign that civilization is long over that it is being removed for no good reason.

I love bald, and at the least very neatly trimmed, I think it looks sexier, it reminds me of my teens and all my early girlfriends. All my girlfriends have been blonde, and blonde girls have less hair than their darker counterparts so i think for me it is what I'm used too.

Personally I cannot see a use for pubic hair and think its purely a genetic remnant that will eventually be lost, but I think the producers of feminine shavers are safe for now lol!

Its meant to have hair on it. Little girls have no hair. So you have to wonder why some men want their chic,s bald. I prefer the fur. Gimme a hit with hair, A fight through the forrest. A big greek or Italian thatch, Something to hold. ooooh yeah, I love pubig hair

what is this: This column - not story - was written nearly five years ago. Why don't you go find a real story and write about it? Or are you just going to write about something that happened five years ago? Move on dude.

what the hell is wrong with you writers and editors at the News Record? This is freaking garbage and it's no wonder that I don't know of anybody who actually respects anything done by the NR. Find a real story and write about that.

I prefer a girl to be hairless all over her body except, of course, for her head and eyebrows/eyelashes. So much better going down there when it's hair free!

I think its also about learned prefrence, personally my first sexual experience was with a young girl who had not yet fallen into the ''shaving trend'', and since that particular experience was so wonderful and exciting seeing it now brings me back to a time in my life when i had less care and generally just a better time in my life. most of my girlfriends to follow were the same way. not to say that i dont like it trimmed or shaved but i prefer it unshaven.
